How To Blend Something In Photoshop

Are you interested in increasing your castor game? Your blending game?

Sentinel this video/blogpost to see how I blend in photoshop!

I volition split this video/blogpost up into different sections hither:

  • I'll become over basic brush and blending fundamentals
  • I'll show my current brushes and how I use them
  • I will prove my current fine art manner to make you lot see where I'g coming from, what my electric current mode is
  • I will show older paintings to run into what I've learned during my years of practicing, how I would meliorate them
Inspired by 2D Panda, it's an art style study! Trying to learn from the artist.

Then when information technology comes to digital painting, y'all can have different type of brushes:

  1. Hard edge brushes
  2. Soft Border Brushes
  3. Fancy Brushes with textures that could simplify the creation of like forrests or clouds or blood splatters or grass or hair or particles. I honestly dont use likewise many of those but they can come in clutch in the right state of affairs

and so with the settings in Photoshop, Pen Pressure can create:

  1. Divergence in Opacity of the brush
  2. Difference in Size of the brush

So with a combination of those you lot tin can create some fun paintings!

Here are some brushes I use!
Here are some brushes I use!

If I would have to recommend some brushes to you, honestly it would exist the bones round difficult edge brush and the soft edge castor. No need to actually leave of your way to become wait for super crazy brushes.

These 2 brushes that I got from the Mioree Brush Pack, and the 2 basic ones, the soft round and difficult edge circular brush.

And and then there's also the smudge tool that I utilise for blending purposes. I started to likewise play around a chip with the Mixer Brush tool. I have non fully figured that one out yet, merely that kinda seems it might also be fun for blending.

I recollect there was this ane artist who said he doesn't ever apply soft edge brushes and blends but with the hard border castor. And that'due south what I did here with my older paintings basically for a while besides. I was afraid of my shapes and blendings too soft.

That is something that i meet in beginners as well, a common mistake: Using the airbrush also much and therefor having a lack of difficult edge shapes, resulting in a chip of a blurry and sometimes muddy motion picture.

You lot can practice that as a practice earlier you use a soft border brush:

Try to create a slope, try to create 10 different steps of values and and so try to alloy them together.

Yous can also practice that with other brushes, soft border brushes.

You basically colour pick from the inbetween stages and with about xl% opacity I make a brush stroke.

Gradients in Photoshop
Gradients in Photoshop

The same idea applies to blending anything really. With colors and skin and all that as well. Just that instead of only values, with colors y'all're as well gonna add together saturation and hue into the mix that can change inside the blending.

A smooth gradient!
A smooth slope!

You can also use the pick tool, the lasso tool and such to create a hard edge choice, and inbetween use the soft edge brushes to also establish that difficult edge – soft edge relationship. It's not something that I practise, just I know that this is what some artists are doing. That'south as well somethign I need to practise and play around with and meet if information technology actually would fit my style.

I guess I do arroyo information technology from a very bones and painterly and traditional style. People have told me that at least. That my stuff kinda looks like oils. I too don't really utilize lots of different layers. It's usually very few layers.

Brush economy and brush confidence is as well a big and important thing here to indicate out: Yous want to generally describe with as big of a brush equally you tin I guess. Yous want to express every bit much with as little as possible endeavor. You wanna be lazy when it comes to that.

If you use a super small brush size, that can kinda pb to craven scratchy things. It could give you a certain texture if you lot want a certain texture I suppose, only in full general y'all want to think of how tin can you be efficient with your brush strokes.

Here's some current paintings of mine and then you can kinda see my manner and where I'm coming from.

Then my fashion at the moment is that information technology's very rendered, very gradual and smooth gradients and blending inbetween the colors.

So at that place's soft and lost edges at that place when it comes to the colors, but the shapes themselves of the individual parts of the painting take a sharp and hard border to them.

And so there is a mix of hard and soft edge going on here in my paintings and that is something that a lot of artists will do as well and recommend.

Like the outside of the face and shirt for instance y'all can meet is hard edge here. The blending inbetween the skin is soft.

I'1000 kinda using ii-4 brushes at the moment as well as the smudge tool in Photoshop. Experimenting a little flake with what linework brush I desire to actually use.

If nosotros go back in time, you can encounter that they become more and more less composite and more rough. I was not using the soft round castor one at that point. Again, because of this artist that only used hard border brushes. But equally time moved on I learned that soft edge brushes arent your enemy and that you can really use them well for blending.

And so if I go over them nowadays, I would basically make easy fixes with the blending tool and only blend things together.

Before and After of going over an old painting quickly!
Before and Afterward of going over an old painting quickly!

I'll throw in here another timelapse video so you tin see my current painting process and blending process. I practice livestream on Twitch too, so you can bank check that out every bit well if you want to hang out and ask questions!

Basically I showtime with the hard edge castor to create the linework. I start putting down a base color, and then I start adding lights and shadows. More recently I started to really use the soft edge circular castor a lot for the coloring and blending and calculation lights and shadows, so right from the offset there is less difficult edges.

In some scenarios I have to go lower with the brush size or apply a totally different brush to create a hard edge. I exercise some blending with the smudge tool as well.

And that was it! Promise this list can assistance you in drawing new fun things!

Later All!
